When a refugee arrives in the United States, the government provides six months of support during which time the refugee is expected to learn English and find a job. Job hunting is difficult at the best of times, but as a newcomer to the country with a limited grasp of English and American culture, the pressure to find employment before the government support runs out is tremendous.
In an effort to help smooth the way for our refugee friends, Northwest has implemented a Job Readiness program that meets on the first and second Wednesday of every month from 6:30-8:30 pm. This curriculum covers everything from dress, to preparing a resume, to cashing their first check. We would love for you to join us on Wednesday nights, as volunteers have the opportunity to help teach the class, assist refugees with paperwork and resume prep, and practice their interview skills.
