After School Homework Help is on Summer Break and will return this fall. Please visit www.nccrefugees.org for other volunteer opportunities.
Imagine arriving in a foreign country at the age of 5 or 15 with very little understanding of the host country’s language or culture. Within a few weeks, you find yourself in a foreign school where you are expected to read independently, or to write an essay on that country’s government. This would be a daunting task for anyone.
The After School Program at the Northwest Community Center is in place to help kids with their assignments, which in many cases means helping them with English. In most cases the After School Program is the only place these kids can receive help since their parents usually don’t speak English. The couple of hours we are available to assist them with their school work is an invaluable resource. In addition to providing practical homework help, we cherish the opportunity to simply love kids by being a listening ear, by being someone they can depend on.
If you have a love for kids - especially kids that can use an encouraging word and some extra homework help - there is a place for you on Mondays – Thursdays from 4:00 PM. – 5:30 PM. As a volunteer, you don't need to be a math or English expert. Simply discuss their assignments and ask questions to support the student. As a part of the After School Team you are empowering children and youth to begin the process of learning how to live in a new culture by assisting them with homework. In addition your demonstration of patience and interest will exhibit Christ's love, establishing you as a trustworthy person hopefully providing you and others opportunities to invite them into Gospel-centered conversations. The more consistency, the better, but you do not need to be present every day of the week.
