When a refugee arrives in the United States, the government provides six months of support during which time the refugee is expected to learn English and find a job. Job hunting is difficult at the best of times, but as a newcomer to the country with a limited grasp of English and American culture, the pressure to find employment before the government support runs out is tremendous.

In an effort to help smooth the way for our refugee friends, Northwest has implemented a Job Readiness program that covers everything from knowing how to dress, to interacting with co-workers, to understanding their pay stubs. Job Readiness meets the last Thursday and Friday of every month from 10:00 am - 12:00 pm.

We also have Job Club where we help those who are seeking employment to prepare their resumes and apply for jobs. Job Club meets the first and second Wednesday of every month from 6:30 pm - 8:30 pm. We would love for you to join us on Thursday and Friday mornings or Wednesday nights, as volunteers have the opportunity to help teach the class, assist refugees with paperwork and resume prep, and practice their interview skills. If you would like to sign up to volunteer for Job Readiness or Job Club, please sign up via SignUp Genius here.
