Imagine arriving in a foreign country at the age of 5 or 15 with very little understanding of the host country’s language or culture. Within a few weeks, you find yourself in a foreign school where you are expected to read independently, or to write an essay on that country’s government. This would be a daunting task for anyone.
In partnership with Heart House Dallas, the After School Program at the Northwest Community Center is a place to help kids with their homework, while providing fun, educational learning experiences as well as holistic care. The couple of hours we are available are an invaluable resource.
If you have a love for kids - especially kids that can use an encouraging word and some extra homework help - there is a place for you on Monday – Friday from 3:30PM – 6:00 PM. As a volunteer, you don't need to be a math or English expert. Simply discuss their assignments, ask questions to support the student, and be a friend. As a part of the After School Team you are empowering children and youth to begin the process of learning how to live in a new culture by assisting them with homework. In addition your demonstration of patience and interest will exhibit Christ's love, establishing you as a trustworthy person hopefully providing you and others opportunities to invite them into Gospel-centered conversations.
How to Volunteer
For all of our volunteers, Heart House does volunteer orientations on Tuesdays at the NCC in the Collaborative Room at 6:30pm. It should take no more than 1 hour.
